Ya Yai ( street vendor )

Kyushu, being on the Western part of Japan and closer to South East Asia, was the first area opened up to foreign contact. As a result some areas are very “non” Japanese, and the cuisine ( always an important part of travel ) is also different.

Kyushu is also known for their street vendor culture, which is rare in Japan. They are as you can see, super tiny, and they also packed in the evenings with salarymen stopping for a bite to eat before going home. You can cram about 7 people into the stand believe it or not.

We had some great food there, but this trip was definitely different food wise compared to other trips to Japan. Food is generally light and healthy, but this trip was full of ramen noodle soup, tempura, and Dallas’ favorite~ “katsu”. Katsu meaning deep fried foods.
